After drying, lignite is compressed into high-density pellets using a large-scale briquetting machine under high pressure, reducing costs.
Time:Jul 12,2020
To achieve high-pressure molding of dried lignite, Zhengzhou Hongxin Mining has manufactured a large-scale ball press machine with a production capacity of 50 tons per hour, specifically designed for pressing dried lignite under high pressure. Our factory’s advanced ball press machine consists of several key components, including a drive motor, a synchronous gear pre-compression unit, the main machine assembly, a hydraulic system, a belt conveyor, and an electrical control system. Notably, the drive system features a synchronized design that ensures optimal performance in terms of design, manufacturing, operation, and maintenance. Meanwhile, the hydraulic system incorporates a compact cylinder structure paired with high clamping force, effectively reducing the overall machine weight and minimizing steel consumption. Additionally, the press rollers are designed with a modular construction, allowing for easy replacement of wear-and-tear parts directly on-site—thus helping to minimize downtime and associated production losses. The high-pressure, additive-free molding process flow for dried lignite is shown in the figure:
Dried lignite is screened; the material passing through the 6mm sieve enters an intermediate bin, where it’s fed uniformly and in precise quantities to a large balling machine via a feeder, before moving on to the next stage. Large Ball Press Machine During the forming process, the material is screened; any oversized particles are returned to the large-scale briquetting machine for further shaping, while the finished pellets are transported for export. In the case of lignite, the high-pressure or shear forces applied during formation cause irreversible damage to its gel structure and pore system, fundamentally altering the coal rank and significantly increasing its degree of coalification in the process.

What types of machinery and equipment are used for high-pressure molding?
The equipment for drying and shaping 50 t/h of lignite primarily includes conveyors, an intermediate silo, a volumetric feeder, a large-scale briquetting machine, a screening unit, a finished-product conveyor, a return conveyor for crushed material, an electrical control system, as well as chutes and supporting structures.
Economic Value of Lignite After Drying and Briquetting
Lignite has low value due to its high moisture content, low calorific value, and tendency to weathering. It is primarily used for direct combustion in power generation. Transporting this high-moisture, low-calorie lignite over long distances in its raw coal form would incur excessively high costs. However, lignite pelletizing effectively addresses three major challenges at once: excessive dust generation after drying, the material's tendency to reabsorb moisture, and its inherent risk of spontaneous combustion.
If the market price of lignite is around 80 yuan per ton, processing it through drying, upgrading, and high-pressure pelletizing can transform it into hard, easily transportable pellets. When these pellets are delivered to coal-consuming industries such as power plants, cement factories, and chemical plants, the value of lignite can soar to over 400 yuan per ton. For instance, a large-scale pelletizing line with a capacity of 50 tons per hour could process up to 400,000 tons of lignite annually. After processing, the profit per ton could reach as high as 100 yuan, meaning that handling just 100 million tons of lignite could generate an annual profit of 10 billion yuan.
Due to the drawbacks of lignite—such as high moisture content, high ash levels, low calorific value, and its tendency to weather and spontaneously combust—it is essential to dry and then shape the coal. The resulting high-pressure molding process for dried lignite features a simple equipment setup and low operational costs, making it well-suited for the lignite drying and upgrading industry.
